. there is little thing called lake effect snow in the sierra nevada where it piles up on the east side of the lake. up to three inches around carson city and reno. you can see it blowing over the lake. it pictures up the lake and dumps it on the other side. definitely some travel troubles in the high country but degree over freezing in santa rosa. oakland, dropped into the 40s as well as san francisco with some warmer air headed in into a redwood city. chilly mid 40s from livermore to concord and san jose. this morning with a little bit of wind out there, you have managed to stay around 50 degrees. gusty north winds, half moon bay up to 20 miles an hour and west wind has allowed you to stay well into the 40s this morning. these winds will be backing off late tonight. that is going to bring in another frosty start to the day tomorrow. sunny and cool today. a little warmer to start the week. that will be monday and tuesday. chance of showers could return wednesday into thursday. not much of a system but we have this system move on through on thursday. behind it still energy. this cold low continues

out to the sierra nevadas, some snowfall will be accompanying it as well. as far as temperatures, also on the cool side with clear skies. chicago, only a high of 10, winnipeg minus 8 here going through your afternoon hours. now these temperatures will start to rebound across much of the country into the weekend, getting back to a more seasonable level. over towards europe, high pressure also dominating here. not much going on in central and eastern europe. we have a system just off the coast of portugal, starting to move onshore, will be bringing heavy rainfall. even around the straits of gibraltar, you could be seeing upwards of some very gusty winds as this continues to move overhead. and also into italy, some heavy rain showers here due to a low pressure area continuing to linger. that's going to move to the east into the balkans, bringing heavy rainfall. even in illustrate taly, you co flash floods. last week we had the significant flooding in and around there. also into northern portions of the uk, another area that will have misty rain showers. london with a high of 9, paris with
in the rain shadows of mountains, such as california's sierra nevada. the rain shadow effect works as follows. warm, moist air moves east across the pacific. it hits the coast and is forced upward to get over the mountains. as it rises, it expands and cools, and its moisture turns into clouds, rain, and sometimes snow. this leaves the air dry. as this cool, dry air moves down, on the leeward side of the mountains, it is compressed and heats up again. the air, now warm as well as dry, sucks up what little moisture may be available from the land below, creating deserts as it continues its journey east of the sierra nevada. many of the world's most prominent or well-known deserts are the result of this rain shadow effect-- the mojave in the united states, the gobi desert in central asia. western south america has a similar situation. we have a chain of mountains down the west coast-- the andes-- which serve as a barrier forming this rain shadow. another factor that plays an indirect role in the formation of deserts is plate tectonics. the position of the continents in the polar regions or the eq

in the sierra nevada this morning with 0 in truck tee and 4 at the tahoe valley airport this morning. plenty of lows across the sacramento valley. the frost advisory has been lifted, allowed to expire. and locally back home you see it's pretty nice and sunny here. the average high this time of year in oakland is 64. we are shy of that. probably by tuesday there will be more seasonable temperatures around the bay. live temperature hd. a little fog was withnous the early morning hours but right now it's quiet out there. we will look for the winds to be more of a southerly component today. out ahead of the next cold front. we will show did you to you and see whether or not it will bring us rain. everyone has warmed up into the 40s. of course, that's relative. 50 half moon bay. many locations dropped into the 30s this morning from the coast to hollister and san jose. our east bay was even colder. we did manage numbers below freezing in our north bay valleys. but we are looking at a warmer night tonight, despite the chill this morning and 9 degrees of cooling compared to yesterday. the numbers go
now it's raining in the sierra nevada with lake tahoe reporting light rain showers. 37 degrees. here's a look at heavenly. the tahoe valley airport, 39 degrees. so with this very warm system we are going to wait until the next one where we change on over to snow and the snow levels begin to lower. 6:51, the official sunrise, setting at 4:57. that's ten hours three minutes of date. here's a look downtown. and you will notice the roadways are wet. but this system is winding down. here's evidence of that. live doppler 7 hd. you will notice as we put it in motion for you, we are on the wack edge of it. but the heavier rain continues to fall well to the north of us. the spottier showers in the east bay and the south bay. here's a look right now at some pretty good downpours from count saint helena. they have picked up over an inch of rain. and lighter returns down here, highway 101, petaluma, novato and heavy wane with vacaville and rio vista. be careful if you are headed that way. light returns here. then from redwood city to mountain view, light rain showers. it will continue to kind of
overnight. they're picking up snow in the high country in the sierra nevada. the higher elevations. king's beach reporting just a light dusting of snow, truckee, still reporting rain. current temperatures there, 33 degrees. and blue canyon right now, some light rain as well. so, the snow levels are high now but will start to come down. santa rosa, over two inches from what we received this evening and last night. san francisco, close to an inch. oakland, over a half inch, and lesser amounts toward san jose. so it has been a nice rainmaker, overnight tonight. temperatures in the 50s and will remain in that zone overnight tonight. decreasing rain overnight. partial clearing by sunday afternoon, and looks like the showers will return as we head into late tuesday. you can see on our satellite radar composite just how quickly this ban moved through. these are clouds here and they could possibly still hold a few light showers. so, we'll say goodbye to the cold front and then we'll look for tomorrow morning, 5:00 a.m. a little bit of partial clearing but still possibly see a few stray showers h
